VLA multifrequency observations of RS CVn binaries
We present multiepoch Very Large Array (VLA) observations at 1.4 GHz, 4.9 GHz, 8.5 GHz and 14.9 GHz for a sample of eight RS CVn binary systems. Circular polarization measurements of these systems are also reported. Most of the fluxes observed are consistent with incoherent emission from mildly relativistic electrons. Several systems show an increase of the degree of circular polarization with ...
متن کاملA NON-EMPIRICAL ROTATION-ACTIVITY RELATION FOR RS CVn BINARIES USING RADIO LUMINOSITIES
An analysis of a comprehensive survey of radio luminosities for RS CVn binary systems is given. A comparison is made between the rotation-activity correlations found using the usual semi-empirical Rossby number and a Rossby number deduced from detailed convection zone models. The use of a non-empirically derived Rossby number does not signiicantly improve the rotation-activity correlation. Alth...
متن کاملSpectroscopic binaries with components of similar mass
The assertion that there is an intrinsic excess of binaries with mass ratios q ≃ 1-the twin hypothesis-is investigated. A strong version of this hypothesis (Hs), due to Lucy & Ricco (1979) and Tokovinin (2000), refers to a narrow peak in the distribution function ψ(q) for q > ∼ 0.95. A weak version (Hw), due to Halbwachs et al. (2003), refers to a broad peak for q > ∼ 0.8. Current data on SB2's...
متن کاملForty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...
متن کاملA search for the hidden population of AM CVn binaries in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
We present the latest results from a spectroscopic survey designed to uncover the hidden population of AM Canum Venaticorum (AM CVn) binaries in the photometric data base of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We selected ∼2000 candidates based on their photometric colours, a relatively small sample which is expected to contain the majority of all AM CVn binaries in the SDSS (expected to be ∼5...
